Banana fair prestige of agricultural activity
Almost all African countries produce a significant amount of banana, but only a few actually export them.
In Cameroon and the Ivory Coast, experimental programmes have been implemented with EU funding to increase the competitiveness of the industry while improving environmental practices.
Angola, a country that has been resilient in the midst of oil crisis, has set its sight on diversifying its economy by organising an international banana fair that attracted 150 national and international exhibitors.
Among these exhibitors is an Angolan company, Novagrolider, which exports at least 60 to 70 tonnes of banana mainly to Portugal monthly.
Senegal: Poultry farmers kick against imports
In less than 15 years, local chicken production in Senegal has increased sevenfold – this was mainly facilitated by the ban on poultry imports since 2005.
That story is about to change as the ban is to be lifted with the arrival of KFC, the American giant of fried chicken.
The Senegalese consumers’ association advocates maintaining the embargo to protect local production.
The poultry sector generates 50,000 direct or indirect jobs in Senegal, and poultry farming accounts for 17% of livestock GDP, according to the cross-industry.
